Introduction

As is described in module 2, the interest in the study of landscape has increased among other things because of heritage management. In order to serve the value of sustainable development, a strategic approach is called for in the field of planning. For that, it is essential to disseminate knowledge on the history of landscape and landscape elements.

Module 8 will go into the metaphor of the cultural biography of landscape and the recent developments on how this metaphor is put to use as a tool for sustainable development. The metaphor refers to the life history of landscape and as such is a personification. One expects to hear an encompassing narrative from the landscape formation (birth) to the several stages of development (life) that can be traced when looking closely at our environment, so that we can capture the spirit of places (Genius loci, Norberg-Schulz 1984) and value the landscape with its historic elements.
